Muay Thai, the national sport of the country of Thailand.
Also known as Thai Boxing or the art of 8 limbs as the fighters use punching, kicking, knees and elbow strikes as well as clinching techniques.
Originating from Ancient Buddhism, the art of Muay Boran emerged as a highly effective unarmed combat system in warfare.
Festivals held by the Buddhist Temples would put on Muay Boran contests for spectators and the evolution into a sport saw fighters wearing hemp rope hand wraps instead of bare knuckle.
In the late 1860,s the King of Thailand pushed for the sport to be more main stream, and the royal family sponsored events held between different training camps.
Each camp was set up as a training facility and for many a place to live, with fighters representing their teams in return for food, shelter and tuition.
The early 1900’s saw Royalty further sanction the sport with official rules, introducing gloves and rounds.
Modern day Thai Boxing is as close to ancient combat as you can get, but is still the most highly effective of any striking art and this has seen it become an integral part of modern mixed martial arts.
Its extreme conditioning, savage techniques and the unrivalled cardio it demands make it popular with professional fighters, purists, novices and anyone just looking to lose weight and get fit.
